Amyloid β (Aβ or Abeta) represents a peptide of 36-43 amino acids, and is critically involved in the main component of amyloid plaques in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients. treatment. The peptide is produced by amyloid precursor protein (APP), which is cleaved by β-secretase and γ-secretase to produce Aβ. Aβ molecules can aggregate to form flexible soluble oligomers, which can exist in various forms. It is now believed that certain misfolded oligomers (called "seeds") can induce other Aβ molecules to also take the form of misfolded oligomers, leading to a chain reaction similar to reaction virus infection. The seeds or the resulting amyloid plaques are toxic to nerve cells. Another protein involved in Alzheimer's disease, tau, also forms virus-like misfolded oligomers, and there is some evidence that misfolded Aβ can induce misfolding of tau.
