Description

Lamin A and lamin C are members of the intermediate filament protein family, located in the nucleus, and function as the skeletal component of the inner nuclear membrane (1). These two proteins are produced by alternate transcription from a single LMNA gene. The molecular weight of Lamin A is approximately 74kDa, while the molecular weight of lamin C is 65kDa. The lamin A protein includes a C-terminal fragment of 98 amino acids that is missing in lamin C, and lamin C has a unique C-terminal 6 amino acid peptide that does not exist in lamin A. Therefore, antibodies raised against lamin A are likely to bind to lamin C, as in the case of MCA-4C4. During cell division, the nuclear layer decomposes and the filaments containing lamin A/C depolymerize, which is regulated by the phosphorylation of cyclin-dependent protein kinase 1 (CDK1).
