Fig.1 Visual system

The visual system includes sensory organs (eyes) and a part of the central nervous system. This part enables organisms to process visual details and form a variety of non-image light response functions. It detects and interprets information from visible light (visible to the species) to construct a representation of the surrounding environment. The visual system performs many complex tasks, including the reception of light, the neural mechanism of stereo vision, the recognition and classification of visual objects, the evaluation of the distance to the object, the perception of movement, and the movement of guiding objects related to the objects seen, color perception, etc.

Clinical Significance

The vision system must have appropriate functions to sense, process and understand the surrounding environment. Difficulties in sensing, processing and understanding light input may adversely affect an individual’s daily communication, learning, and ability to effectively complete routine tasks.

Cataracts make the lens cloudy, which affects vision. It may be accompanied by yellowing or turbidity, and yellowing can occur separately. This is usually the result of aging, disease or drug use.

Presbyopia is a visual condition that causes hyperopia. The lens of the eye becomes too stiff to adapt to the normal reading distance, and the focus tends to remain fixed at a distance.

Shadow is a type of blindness that produces a small blind spot in the field of vision, usually caused by damage to the primary visual cortex.

Aphasia or facial blindness is a brain disease that makes it impossible to recognize the face. This disease usually appears after the fusiform facial area (FFA) is damaged.

Visual Absence or Visual Form Absence is a brain disease that causes the inability to recognize objects. This disease usually occurs after impaired inguinal flow.
