Hydrocephalus (HC) is a condition where abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is build up in the cavities of the brain. It is also called water in the brain. HC can be present at birth or developed in childhood or adulthood. It is divided into different categories, acquired hydrocephalus, congenital hydrocephalus, communicating hydrocephalus, non-communication hydrocephalus, normal pressure hydrocephalus and hydrocephalus ex-vacuo.
Now, little is understood about the causes of hydrocephalus. It is classically defined as a result of a dynamic imbalance between the production and absorption of CSF. The fluid accumulates in the two large lateral ventricles, resulting in an enlarged brain and skull. The accumulation of fluid eventually may cause neurological symptoms such as convulsions, intellectual disability, and epileptic seizures.
