Target Overview

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and liver during fetal development. Its production nearly ceases after birth, and consequently, its concentration in the blood of healthy adults is very low. However, AFP expression is reactivated in certain pathological states, and its serum levels become significantly elevated in the presence of specific cancers, most notably hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and germ cell tumors. This re-expression makes AFP a critical and widely used tumor biomarker for cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment monitoring.
