Target Overview

The ErbB-2 (HER2) protein is a member of the human epidermal growth factor receptor family of receptor tyrosine kinases. Unlike other family members, HER2 has no known direct binding ligand and is typically activated through forming heterodimers with other ligand-bound EGFR family members. Amplification or overexpression of the ERBB2 gene is a key driver in the development and progression of several types of cancer, most notably approximately 20-30% of breast cancers as well as gastric cancers. This makes HER2 a critically important biomarker and a premier target for cancer therapies.
