Target Overview

Amyloid beta (Aβ) is a peptide, typically 36-43 amino acids in length, which is derived from the proteolytic cleavage of the much larger Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP). While Aβ's physiological function is not fully resolved, its role in pathology is central to Alzheimer's disease. The Aβ monomer has a high propensity to misfold and aggregate, forming soluble oligomers, fibrils, and eventually the dense, insoluble amyloid plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. This aggregation process is considered a primary toxic event that initiates a cascade of neurodegeneration, making Aβ and its various aggregated forms a critical target for therapeutic and diagnostic development.
