Description

This gene encodes a member of the paired box (PAX) transcription factor family. The main feature of this gene family is a novel, highly conserved DNA binding motif called a paired box. Paired cassette transcription factors are important regulators in early development, and changes in their gene expression are thought to contribute to tumor transformation. This gene encodes a B cell lineage-specific activator protein that is expressed in the early stage of B cell differentiation rather than late stage. Its expression has also been detected in the development of the central nervous system and testis, so the encoded protein may also play a role in neurodevelopment and spermatogenesis. The gene is located at 9p13 and is associated with the t(9; 14) (p13; q32) translocation in plasmacytoid subtypes of small lymphocytic lymphoma and derived large cell lymphoma. This translocation makes the effective E-mu enhancer of the IgH gene very close to the PAX5 promoter, indicating that the dysregulation of the gene transcription contributes to the pathogenesis of these lymphomas. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcriptional variants encoding different isoforms.
