Target Overview

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a central protein in lipid metabolism, primarily responsible for transporting cholesterol and other fats. The APOE3 isoform is the most common version in the general population and is considered the baseline or "neutral" standard in terms of risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease. It is thought to carry out normal, efficient functions in both lipid transport and the clearance of amyloid-beta from the brain. Studying the APOE3 isoform is critical for understanding the mechanisms by which the other variants, APOE2 (protective) and APOE4 (high-risk), modulate disease pathology.
