Target Overview

Alpha-synuclein is a protein that is abundant in the human brain, where it is found primarily at the tips of neurons in specialized structures called presynaptic terminals. Although its exact function is not fully understood, it is thought to play a role in regulating the release of neurotransmitters. Alpha-synuclein is most notable for its central role in a group of neurodegenerative disorders known as "synucleinopathies." In these diseases, the protein misfolds and aggregates into insoluble fibrils that accumulate in neurons as Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. These aggregates are the defining pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy (MSA).
