The 5-HT1A receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) and one of the principal receptors for the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine). It is widely distributed throughout the central nervous system, where it plays a critical dual role. As a postsynaptic receptor, it modulates neuronal excitability, while as a presynaptic autoreceptor on serotonin neurons, it provides inhibitory feedback to reduce serotonin synthesis and release.
