Product Overview

Description

This is an advanced therapeutic agent consisting of a pegylated RNA aptamer engineered to bind with high specificity and affinity to Complement component 5 (C5). By binding to C5, it effectively blocks its cleavage into the pro-inflammatory fragment C5a and the lytic pathway initiator C5b. This targeted inhibition of the terminal complement cascade reduces local inflammation and cell damage, offering a precise therapeutic strategy for diseases driven by overactive complement.

Target Overview

Complement component 5 (C5) is the central protein that initiates the terminal, lytic pathway of the complement system. During complement activation, it is cleaved by C5 convertase into two potent, biologically active fragments: C5a and C5b. The C5a fragment is a powerful anaphylatoxin that mediates inflammation by recruiting and activating immune cells. The C5b fragment initiates the assembly of the C5b-9 complex, also known as the Membrane Attack Complex (MAC), which creates pores in cell membranes, leading to cell lysis. This dual role in driving both inflammation and direct cell destruction makes C5 a critical therapeutic target.
