Voltage-Gated Sodium Channels
Voltage-gated sodium channels (NaV) are responsible for the initiation of action potentials and propagation in excitable cells (including nerve, muscle, and neuroendocrine cell types). NaV is a large multimeric transmembrane protein composed of an alpha subunit and one or more smaller beta subunits. NaV controls the activation and propagation of action potentials, thereby mediating a wide range of physiological processes, including central and peripheral nervous system functions, skeletal muscle contraction, and heart rhythm. Recent advances clarify that NaV channels are one of the most attractive drug targets for pain relief and many other pathological conditions.
