Description
CD141 is a 75 kD single-chain type I membrane glycoprotein, also known as thrombomodulin, TM, THRM, THBD and fetal regulatory protein. CD141 is an important cofactor in the protein C anticoagulation system. After binding to its ligand thrombin, CD141 activates protein C, which degrades coagulation factors Va and Villa, thus reducing the amount of thrombin. CD141 is expressed on macrophages, monocytes, bone marrow dendritic cell subsets, vascular endothelial cells and keratinocytes. In addition to its anticoagulant function, CD141 is also involved in the development of embryos and atherosclerotic plaques. CD141 is an endothelial cell surface glycoprotein involved in blood coagulation regulation. Through direct interaction with thrombin, thrombomodulin can lead to down-regulation of multiple procoagulant pathways to preserve the anticoagulant properties of the endothelial cell surface.
