Product Overview

Description

Tau is a low molecular weight member of the microtubule-associated protein or MAP family. Several serious human diseases are related to the accumulation of tau protein, the most notable being the neurofibrillary tangles of Alzheimer's disease. The accumulation of tau in neurons is also a feature of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, Pick's disease and several other neurodegenerative diseases. These diseases are collectively referred to as "taupathies". A single mammalian tau gene produces at least 9 different proteins through alternate transcription. In the central nervous system, 6 isoforms in the range of 48-67kDa determined by SDS-PAGE dominate, but the larger isoforms are mainly found in the peripheral nervous system.
