Product Overview

Description

The development of the central nervous system includes the development of the brain, spinal cord, optic nerve and auditory system. In the neural tube, stem cells produce two major types The cells that make up most of the nervous system: neurons and glia. Both types of cells differentiate into many different types with highly specialized functions and shapes. The development of the peripheral and central nervous system begins in the early stages of embryogenesis and can be tracked by using lineage antibodies specific to each stage of neuron development. RE1 Silent Transcription Factor (REST), also known as Neuron Restricted Silencing Factor (NRSF), is a protein encoded by the REST gene in humans and serves as a transcriptional repressor. REST is clearly involved in the suppression of neural genes in non-neuronal cells. Many genetic diseases are related to changes in the expression pattern of REST, including colon cancer and small cell lung cancer have found truncated versions of REST. In addition to these cancers, REST defects are also attributed to Huntington's disease, neuroblastoma, and the effects of epileptic seizures and ischemia.

This gene encodes a transcriptional repressor, which suppresses neuronal genes in non-neuronal tissues. It is a member of the Kruppel type zinc finger transcription factor family. It inhibits transcription by combining DNA sequence elements called neuronal restricted silencer elements (NRSE, also known as RE1). The protein is also present in undifferentiated neural progenitor cells, and it is thought that the repressor may act as a major negative regulator of neurogenesis. Splice transcript variants have been described. However, their full-length nature has not yet been determined. It was found that elderly people with Alzheimer's disease have a reduced REST level.
