Target Overview

GABRA1 codes for the alpha-1 subunit of the GABA-A (γ-aminobutyric acid type A) receptor. GABA-A receptors are ligand-gated ion channels that serve as the primary mediators of fast inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system. The alpha-1 subunit is the most abundant alpha subunit isoform in the adult brain and is a critical component of receptor assembly and function. These receptors are the target for major classes of drugs, including benzodiazepines and barbiturates. Mutations in the GABRA1 gene that impair receptor function are a known cause of genetic epilepsy syndromes, highlighting the subunit's essential role in regulating neuronal excitability.
