Target Overview

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA), also known as kallikrein-3 (KLK3), is a serine protease enzyme produced almost exclusively by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland. Its primary physiological function is to liquefy seminal fluid to allow for sperm motility. However, PSA is most widely known as a clinical biomarker. Disruption of the prostate gland architecture, most notably by prostate cancer, can lead to elevated levels of PSA leaking into the bloodstream. Measuring serum PSA is therefore the standard, front-line method for the screening, diagnosis, and monitoring of prostate cancer.
