Presenilin-1 is a multi-pass transmembrane protein that forms the catalytic core of the gamma-secretase complex, an intramembrane protease. This complex is responsible for cleaving the transmembrane domains of numerous proteins, most notably the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) after it has been initially processed by enzymes like BACE1. This final cleavage by the Presenilin-1-containing complex is what generates the various species of Amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides.
