Oligodendrocyte Marker Related Research Reagents
Oligodendrocytes (ODs) are glial cells in the central nervous system (CNS) that form the myelin sheath of axons to support rapid nerve conduction. OD also contributes to neuroplasticity and provides nutritional support for neurons. Each OD can interact with multiple axons and has the ability to quickly update its myelin sheath. Each myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes has up to 50 independent axons. As a result, OD has a high metabolic rate and is very susceptible to oxidative stress. OD is highly sensitive to pro-inflammatory molecules produced during inflammation and responds by producing low-quality myelin. In addition, OD can also affect neuronal survival, axon transport, axon caliber, and ion channel aggregation along the axon. OD damage and dysfunction are responsible for the development of many diseases and conditions, including multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder.
Each stage of oligodendrocyte differentiation and maturation can be monitored by the specific morphology markers, including the most common maturation stage markers CNPase, Olig2 and oligodendrocyte marker O4. Creative Biolabs provides a series of research tools needed to study the development, maturation and function of oligodendrocytes. Our product portfolio includes monoclonal antibodies, polyclonal antibodies, labeled antibodies, proteins, analytical kits, and small molecule activators and inhibitors.
