Description
Somatostatin receptor 4 is one of five receptor subtypes known as SSTR1-5. They are G protein-coupled receptors characterized by seven transmembrane domains with an extracellular amino-terminal domain and an intracellular carboxyl-terminus. These receptors play a role in the regulation of many physiological processes; such as the secretion of insulin; glucagon; and growth hormone; and cell growth induced by neuronal excitation in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Somatostatin receptors are activated by the secretion of somatostatin in neural and endocrine cells.
