Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) is a major structural protein of the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. Its primary function is to ensure the proper compaction of the myelin layers by mediating the adhesion of the cytosolic surfaces of the oligodendrocyte membrane. This is essential for maintaining the integrity of the myelin sheath, which insulates nerve axons and facilitates rapid nerve impulse conduction. Due to its abundance and location, MBP is also a primary autoantigen in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), where an autoimmune attack against MBP and other myelin components leads to demyelination and neurodegeneration.
