Description

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a member of the albumin superfamily. It is a plasma protein of approximately 68 kDa produced in the yolk sac and liver of the fetus. It is found in four-week-old fetuses and reaches its highest concentration during the 12th to 16th weeks of pregnancy. It binds and transports various ligands such as bilirubin, fatty acids, steroids, heavy metals and various drugs. After birth, the plasma levels of healthy adults drop to trace amounts.
