Description

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that participates in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS). SOD catalyzes the disproportionation of superoxide radical anions (O2-) into hydrogen peroxide, which is then catalyzed into non-toxic O2 and H2O by glutathione peroxidase and catalase. Several types of SOD have been identified. These include intracellular copper, zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu, Zn-SOD/SOD-1), mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD/SOD-2) and extracellular copper, zinc superoxide dismutase Enzyme (EC-SOD / SOD-3). SOD1 exists in the form of a 32 kDa homodimer enzyme in all eukaryotes, and each subunit contains a Cu and Zn ion. Manganese containing 80 kDa tetramer enzyme SOD2 is located in the mitochondrial matrix, next to the main endogenous superoxide source (mitochondrial respiratory chain). SOD3 is a heparin-binding polymer of disulfide-linked dimers, which is mainly expressed in human lungs, blood vessel walls and airways. SOD4 is a copper molecular chaperone for superoxide dismutase (CCS), which can deliver Cu exclusively to copper/zinc superoxide dismutase. CCS can activate copper/zinc superoxide dismutase by directly inserting Cu cofactors. SOD1 destroys free radicals that are usually produced in cells, which are toxic to biological systems.
