Description
Neurofilaments are 10nm or intermediate filament proteins that are specifically found in neurons. They are mainly composed of three main proteins called NF-L, NF-M and NF-H, but they may also include other filament proteins. The main function of nerve filaments may be to control the diameter of large axons (1). NF-L is a neurofilament light or low molecular weight peptide. It runs on a 68-70kDa SDS-PAGE gel. There are some differences between different species. NF-L antibodies (such as MCA-6H112) can be used to identify neuronal cells and their processes in cell culture and sectioning materials. NF-L antibody can also be used to visualize the accumulation of neurofilaments that is seen in many neurological diseases, such as Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS), giant axon neuropathy, Charcot-Marie Tooth disease, etc. (2-4).
