Target Overview

Complement C4-A is a central protein of the classical pathway of the complement system, a component of the innate immune response. Its primary function is opsonization, where it covalently attaches to pathogens and cellular debris to "tag" them for clearance by phagocytic cells. In the brain, it also plays a role in synaptic pruning, the process of eliminating excess synapses during development. The C4A gene exhibits significant structural and copy number variation in the human population. Specific genetic variants that lead to increased expression of C4A have been identified as a major risk factor for developing schizophrenia.
