Target Overview

Neurexins are a family of presynaptic cell adhesion molecules (encoded by the NRXN1, NRXN2, and NRXN3 genes) that are essential for the proper formation and function of synapses in the brain. They act as key organizers at the synapse by binding to a variety of postsynaptic partners, most notably Neuroligins, to form a trans-synaptic bridge. This interaction is critical for specifying synaptic properties and ensuring correct neurotransmission. Due to their fundamental role in building and maintaining neural circuits, genetic disruptions of Neurexin genes are strongly associated with a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia.
