Target Overview

nterleukin-23 (IL-23) is a heterodimeric cytokine composed of two distinct subunits: the p19 subunit (encoded by the IL23A gene) and the p40 subunit (encoded by the IL12B gene), the latter of which is shared with the cytokine IL-12. IL-23 is a key regulator of chronic inflammation and autoimmunity. Its primary function is to drive the expansion and maintenance of a specific subset of T helper cells known as Th17 cells. These cells produce highly pro-inflammatory cytokines (like IL-17), making the IL-23/IL-17 axis a central pathway in the pathology of many autoimmune diseases, including psoriasis, Crohn's disease, and psoriatic arthritis.
