Neuroligins are a family of postsynaptic cell adhesion molecules that are fundamental to the development and function of synapses in the brain. They act as binding partners for presynaptic Neurexins, forming a trans-synaptic bridge that is critical for recruiting neurotransmitter receptors and other essential synaptic components. This Neurexin-Neuroligin complex helps organize and stabilize synapses, with different Neuroligins localizing to either excitatory (e.g., Neuroligin-1) or inhibitory (e.g., Neuroligin-2) synapses.
