Beta-secretase 1 (BACE1) is an aspartic protease that functions as the primary beta-secretase enzyme in the brain. Its most critical and widely studied role is performing the initial proteolytic cleavage of the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP). This enzymatic cut is the first and rate-limiting step in the pathway that produces Amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides.
