inquiryDescription
Glutamate decarboxylase 2 is encoded by the GAD2 gene and is one of several forms of glutamate decarboxylase. Glutamate decarboxylase 2 is responsible for catalyzing the production of γ-aminobutyric acid from L-glutamic acid. The pathogenic effect of this enzyme has been identified in the human pancreas because it has been identified as an autoantibody and autoreactive T cell target in insulin-dependent diabetes. GAD2 may also play a role in stiff human syndrome. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcriptional variants encoding the same protein.
