Description
Ataxin-2 is a polyglutamine protein involved in a variety of biological processes, including regulating mRNA translation. Ataxin-2 contains two domains, Sm1 and Sm2, which are related to RNA splicing and protein interaction. In the brain, ataxia 2 is expressed in the hypothalamus, which is the brain area responsible for controlling energy balance and metabolic homeostasis. Ataxin-2 mutations are associated with the development of type 2 spinocerebellar ataxia. Ataxin-2 mutant protein with medium-length polyglutamine amplification (27-33 polyQ) can modify the toxicity of TDP-43 and increase the risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
