Description
The small GTPases Arl13b, similar to ADP-ribosylation factor (Arf), is a small GTPases, mainly found in the primary cilia of neuroepithelial cells, radial glial cells and fibroblasts. Null Arl13b mice showed multiple structural defects in the neural tube, limbs and eyes. The loss of Arl13b function is related to the impaired acoustic hedgehog signal of radial progenitor cells, the destruction of cilia polarity and the scaffold. Three mutations in the human Arl13b gene were found in patients with Joubert Syndrom (JS), two of which are located in the sensitive switch region that binds to GTP, namely switch 2 region. Consistent with the mutant phenotype in the null allele of mice, patients with Jobert syndrome are characterized by neurological, eye, and renal defects, and mental retardation. A number of studies have shown that the role of Arl13b in ciliogenesis is mediated by acoustic hedgehog signaling.
