Target Overview

Tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) is a serine protease that is a fundamental component of the fibrinolytic system, the body's mechanism for breaking down blood clots. The primary function of tPA is to convert the inactive zymogen, plasminogen, into its active form, plasmin. Plasmin is the enzyme that directly degrades the fibrin mesh that forms the structural foundation of a clot. Due to its potent clot-dissolving (thrombolytic) properties, recombinant tPA is used as a critical emergency medication for treating patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and pulmonary embolism.
