Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (VEGF-A) is the primary signaling protein responsible for stimulating angiogenesis-the formation of new blood vessels. It is essential for normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, bone formation, and wound healing. However, VEGF-A is also a critical factor in pathology. It is overexpressed by many tumors, which hijack its function to create new blood vessels that supply them with nutrients and oxygen, thereby enabling tumor growth and metastasis. It also drives abnormal vessel growth in eye diseases like wet age-related macular degeneration, making it a major therapeutic target.
