Target Overview

Methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2) is a nuclear protein that acts as a critical reader and interpreter of the epigenome. It specifically binds to methylated DNA at CpG sites, which are regions where a cytosine nucleotide is followed by a guanine nucleotide. Upon binding, MeCP2 recruits other protein complexes to modify chromatin structure and repress gene transcription. This function is essential for the proper maturation and maintenance of neurons. Mutations in the MECP2 gene are the primary cause of Rett syndrome, a severe X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder that predominantly affects females.
