Target Overview

Microtubule-associated protein tau (Tau) is a protein primarily found in neurons that plays a crucial role in stabilizing microtubules within axons. These microtubules are essential components of the neuronal cytoskeleton, acting as tracks for intracellular transport. In a class of neurodegenerative disorders known as "tauopathies," which includes Alzheimer's disease, Tau protein undergoes abnormal hyperphosphorylation. This chemical change causes it to detach from microtubules and aggregate into insoluble, paired helical filaments. These filaments accumulate inside neurons to form neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), which are a primary pathological hallmark of these diseases.
