Description
The rat cochlear microglia cell line was developed from the immunomagnetically enriched CD11b+ cell population of the P3 rat cochlea, and was immortalized with the adenovirus 12S E1A gene in a replication-incapable retroviral vector. Microglia are a unique lineage of mononuclear phagocytes, which play an important role in the development of the central nervous system, immune defense and inflammation. Microglia account for 10-15% of all cells in the brain. As resident macrophages, they are the primary and main form of active immune defense in the central nervous system (CNS).
